After welcoming an adorable newborn baby into the world, many parents can’t help but flood their social media accounts with snapshots of cute moments with their new baby.
Mom of three Maci Bookout, from MTV’s Teen Mom, recently posted what she thought was an adorable photo of her fiancé, Taylor McKinney, holding their 2-month-old son to her Instagram account. However, as her followers looked at the photo, they couldn’t help but notice that the new dad was actually doing something very dangerous.
In the photo, McKinney is seen holding baby Maverick Reed in a baby sling with one hand supporting his butt and legs, but commenters were quick to scold the parents for carrying him in the sling since babies can easily suffocate in them.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, baby slings can be dangerous for infants under 4 months old and younger, babies with low birth weight or were born prematurely, and any baby with a cold or any illness that affects breathing.
While parents are often criticized by strangers online for harmless little mistakes, these commenters had a valid reason to be concerned since a baby sling can actually press up against a baby’s airways and can suffocate them silently within two minutes. And if the baby is not old enough to support their own head, like baby Maverick, their heads can fall forward onto mom or dad’s chest, which can block airways and suffocate them.
“The baby will not be able to cry for help and can slowly suffocate,” the CPSC explained.
