Heroic Dad Donates Kidney To Save Daughter’s Life

The unofficial father-of-the-year is currently in recovery in a hospital in Manchester after donating a kidney that saved his 3-year-old daughter’s life.

Lee Chester, a 37-year-old account manager for the United Kingdom, told the Manchester Evening News: “This is something that any parent would do, you just say yes, it’s in the terms.”

His daughter Esme was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure last June. “Things changed overnight,” said Lee. “Her kidney failure was end stage – the worst it could get.”

Things took a bad turn very quickly. Esme had to spend 14 months on dialysis, sitting for up to 12 hours every day through the procedure.

When doctors raised the prospect of a kidney transplant, both Lee and partner Rachel Mulhearn were tested for compatibility, with Lee found to be the better match. ”I said yes immediately,” he said.

The operation was carried out last week with success. Lee is now recovering at Manchester Royal Infirmary, and Esme at Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Lee said: “We are both doing really well. I’m so glad it’s gone well for Esme. She’s eating mashed potato in bed.”

“I’m quite sore so I’ll have to milk it at home for a bit. It really does show the importance of opting in for organ donation. It really does save lives.”

Lee and Rachel hope Esme will be able to recover in time to start at pre-school next month.

Rachel Mulhearn said on Facebook: “My beautiful family recovering after Daddy donated his kidney to our very brave little girl Esme who has faced far too much for any person let alone a child.

“Here’s to the future thanks to the best daddy in the world. He has given our daughter more than a gift, a chance at a better, healthier life and we will teach her to realise anything really is possible.
