A Brazilian beauty treatment called velaterapia is making its rounds in the beauty industry, but its shocking method for removing split ends has everyone gasping.
Popular Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosia posted a photo to her Instagram making everyone curious about the new trend, as a hairdresser is shown burning her split ends off with a candle.
The idea behind velaterapia is that it burns off split ends and makes hair smooth and shiny.
One Brazilian spa even describes the treatment as “cauterize-[ing]” the hair. Laces and Hair Salon in Sao Paolo writes: “It is a process where a flame cauterizes the hair, leaving behind a passage of nutrients to its interior, removes split ends and the impermeability of the hair caused by brushing and other chemicals.”
The hair stylist first divides and twists the hair into small sections, and then they take a candle to the hair, carefully moving it up and down the twisted section.
The whole process takes between two to three hours and it can be done on any hair type. It’s most effective, however, for dry, damaged hair due to styling, and dying. According to the Daily Mail, velaterapia has been popular in South America since the 1960s, where women tried to do the dangerous treatment by themselves at home.
“While burning split ends might remove the split in the hair, you are also creating a potential vulnerability to the fiber itself, which results in weaker strands,” Elizabeth Cunnane-Phillips, a trichologist at the Philip Kingsley Clinic in NYC, told Refinery 29. “There are a lot more effective ways to remove split ends than to burn it off. I would say, don’t take the risk.”
