A Crohn’s Disease sufferer is speaking out against McDonald’s after he was denied from using the bathroom despite having a medical card allowing him to do so.

Chron’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, and fatigue. When a sufferer isn’t feeling well, it can be very problematic and important they locate a bathroom quickly.

For this reason, medical cards like this one are issued to inform businesses that it’s urgent the sufferer use the facilities.

It’s like an all-access key to any bathroom.

Student Liam Seacombe says he presented this card to McDonald’s employees and despite having a legitimate need, he was told he couldn’t use their facilities. Security even threatened to kick him out.

Liam said he had become unwell at 2.50am while enjoying a night out with friends. He asked to use the toilet but was refused entry. Liam told the Huddersfield Examiner, “I kindly asked a member of staff if I could use their toilet.

“The member of staff advised that the toilets were closed and further grabbed the manager who said that they were closed and couldn’t be accessed.

At this point, I presented them with my ‘Can’t Wait’ card, where the manager again, quite rudely, told me the toilets were shut. I explained to them about the card and my illness, but insisting that the toilets were completely inaccessible, they ushered the security guards to remove me from the restaurant for simply wanting to use the toilet.

This story comes out amid controversy of invisible illnesses. Just because a disability can’t be seen, the rationale goes, doesn’t mean it’s any less debilitating.

Crohn’s Disease affects millions of people around the world who live with this issue, and often it’s impossible to tell if somebody is suffering from such an ailment.

A McDonald’s spokesman said: “We would like to apologise for any embarrassment or upset caused to Mr. Seacombe and encourage him to get in contact with our Customer Services team.”
