Kate Gosselin Reveals Why She Sent Special Needs Son Away To Get Help

Since her unconventional family’s life was first broadcasted to the world on Jon & Kate Plus 8 back in 2007, Kate Gosselin’s world has been anything but private.

From everyday life with her twin daughters and younger sextuplets, to her very public and heartbreaking divorce from playboy ex-husband Jon Gosselin, Kate has been both praised for her parenting and then torn apart in the media.

Yet in the past few years, we haven’t seen much from the mother and her brood of 8. Now, Kate has opened t PEOPLE up about a deeply personal issue that the world doesn’t know about, that she has made the decision to send her 12-year-old son away for treatment.

“Collin has special needs,” Gosselin said of one of her pre-teen sextuplets. “[There’s] a fairly fluid diagnosis of what those needs are, but he needs to learn certain strategies to help him deal with things. This has been a struggle we’ve had for a very long time, and it’s one I’ve dealt with on my own. I’ve felt very alone in this. By the same token, it’s not something that has only impacted me or him – our entire family has been impacted.”

However, this isn’t the first time Gosselin has spoken out about her son’s issues. In 2010, it was reported that her then 6-year-olds Collin and Alexis were kicked out of a private school in their hometown of Pennsylvania for abusing students and administrators.

“Both Alexis and Collin received three full weeks of intensive special treatment to focus their behavior,” RadarOnline reported in 2010. “While the teacher was able to achieve some success, it became apparent to the school that the pair needed intensive assistance to help them with their social, emotional and academic needs.”

Gosselin revealed to PEOPLE she made the difficult decision to send Collin away to get help, as his behavior affected her entire family. Yet the mom says his absence has taken a real toll on she and his siblings.

“When your kids go to college, do you miss them? Yes, but you reassure yourself that they are getting so much out of it,” Gosselin said. “And that’s the same sort of investment I feel like I’ve made Collin’s future.
