When a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit central Italy in the last week of August, no one knew the carnage it would bring in its wake…
Everyone knows that earthquakes are bad news, but when they strike, completely by surprise, they are even worse. The Protezione Civile, the authority responsible for reporting on deaths and casualties in Italy, reported that 292 people tragically lost their lives to the quake. 232 in Amatrice, 11 in Accumoli and 49 in Arquata del Tronto. There are also at least 2,000 displaced people finding shelter in emergency camps, most of which have lost everything they owned.

1. Destruction
Sergio Pirozzi, the mayor of Amatrice, told reporters following the quake, “The town isn’t here anymore. The aim right now is to save as many lives as possible”.
