Amanda Masters was never even sure she wanted to have kids at all, however, when she and her partner found out she was pregnant, they were thrilled. But during her 12-week scan, the couple found out they weren’t just having one baby, they were actually expecting twins.

After a mostly typical pregnancy, Masters went into labor at 37 weeks pregnant, and when she saw her baby boys, they looked practically identical. At first, baby Ahren needed some extra care, but after a few days, he came home to join his brother Ethan. Masters and her partner Spencer Davis were thrilled to have their two healthy infants home together, but about a month later she started getting concerned when Ethan started getting pink patches on his face.

Masters immediately brought Ethan to the doctor, but they said it was just a harmless birthmark. “But I knew it was wasn’t nothing. Within weeks, the right side of his face, ear canal and the inside of his mouth was covered in a bright red lump,” Masters said. “Usually strangers coo over your new babies, but people would be shocked when they looked at Ethan, it was devastating.”

“The birthmark kept getting bigger. At its largest it covered half of his face,” Masters said. “He was wheezing and didn’t seem right for a newborn baby.” At two months old, Masters brought Ethan back to the hospital, and surgeons finally realized that the birthmark was actually growing on his windpipe, which was suffocating him.

Doctors warned that without treatment, Ethan would most likely die because of the blocked airway, and told them they could either go through a risky surgery or try a trial drug. The family decided to try the new drug, and within weeks, the mark started shrinking and was able to go home.

“I couldn’t believe how quickly his angry red mark disappeared. I cried when I saw the difference and still can’t believe it when I see the shocking photos of him now,” Masters said of her now 7-year-old. “We really haven’t looked back since Ethan took that drug. Now he and his twin are an inseparable pair who just want to spend time together.”
