A few years ago, the hair around 13-year-old Rowdy’s eyes started to turn white.

The owners of this beautiful black Labrador, Niki and Tim Umbenhower, learned that medical tests revealed their dog Rowdy has vitiligo, a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches. Just like humans, dogs can also get vitiligo, and it makes certain parts of their fur lighter than others.

This skin condition is particularly noticeable on Rowdy since he has black fur, and the vitiligo has caused light circles of fur around his eyes, which makes him look like he has a “reverse panda” effect.

Rowdy gets stopped all the time in the street, as people think his owners painted his fur white. “Rowdy’s become a celebrity,” Niki told The Daily Mail. “It’s exhausting taking him anywhere because people always stop us and comment how he looks like an orca or a reverse panda. They ask me if I have painted his eyes.”

Now, because of his condition, he’s been appointed as a representative for kids with vitiligo by the American Vitiligo Research Foundation. Rowdy is able to stand up for children who suffer the same skin condition as him and also teach them to love the skin they were born in.

“I think it’s great that he can help raise awareness and educate people about vitiligo,” Niki says.
