Your 20’s lay the foundation for your future.

Your career, relationships, health, and well-being are all dependent upon these critical years, and you can either waste them, or take advantage of them. This decade is one full of many ups and downs, but also fantastic opportunities for growth and change.

To help you lay your foundation, here are LifeDaily’s 9 Things Successful People Do In Their 20’s:

1. They learn to manage their time

When you are first starting your career, it can be hard to manage your time effectively. In order to take full advantage and be productive, an entrepreneur and author named Etienne Garbugli suggests two key things to help you manage your time better: 1. Setting deadlines for everything you’re working on, and 2. Avoiding multitasking.

2. They don’t prioritize money before all else

While there are some that spend their 20’s drifting off into outer space with no real direction, there are others who are so afraid of failure, that they take a job only because it provides a comfortable pay check. Rich Tatum, a Quora user explains that a job you’re not interested in quickly becomes a career, and by the time you’re 30, it’s a lot harder to start pursuing your passion. “The key is to pursue something that you’re passionate about and is valuable to employers.”- Author Cal Newport

3. They save

Bankrate did a survey of approximately 1,000 people and found that 69% of those ages 18-29 had no retirement savings at all. Most twenty-somethings can hardly think about next week, let alone their retirement savings. And while this is normal, it is smart to start looking into your company’s 401(k) plan if they have one, or if not, open an IRA again. The longer you wait to do this, you’re just missing out on years of money gained through interest.

4. They develop a debt repayment plan

Most 20-something’s have a ton of debt, either from college or graduate school. But, your debt doesn’t need to linger on for the rest of your life, haunting you until you repay it all. If you develop a debt repayment plan, you can monitor how much of your debt you are paying off. If you see you are making progress, you won’t continue to worry about it every day until it’s paid off.

5. They take care of their health

Every year that goes by, it becomes harder to get into a workout regimen, and takes even longer to recover from a late night of drinking. If you develop healthy habits while you’re still young, they will set you up for the next phase of your life. You can enjoy your vices in moderation, eat well, and choose to workout instead of drinking all night.

6. They don’t try to please everyone

As you get older, you realize that it’s more important to be true to yourself, rather than please everyone else. Successful 20 something’s know this, and they know that while it’s best to be on friendly terms with their boss, and coworkers, they know that not everyone is going to like them. The sooner you accept this, the better off you will be. And you will meet people throughout your life that you don’t like as well.

7. They’re persistent

In life, you may get fired from your job, have a relationship end, or have your company fail. And while all of these are devastating things, they are part of life. Only the truly successful are able to learn from what went wrong and move forward with persistence. All of the problems you will experience in your life are opportunities. Opportunities to learn, to grow, and to do better for the next time. Noone gets it right every time around, but persistence will keep you in the game.

8. They’re honest

Manipulating others and being disingenuous won’t get you far in the long run, and they’re not keys to a lasting, and fruitful career. Author Arjuna Perkins says:  “The truth has a way of rearing its ugly head, so the sooner you can come to integrity with yourself and the world at large, the sooner you’ll be able to get working towards what you really want, who you really want to be.”

9. They let things go

Picking fights and holding grudges will make you miserable in your personal and professional life. And learning to let things go now will save you a lot of stress and headaches in your future. All of your hard work may not always be recognized, and people are going to disappoint you, but never let that be an excuse to be lazy or bitter.

Please share any successful habits for people in their 20’s. We can certainly use it.
