Toddler Suffocates During Naptime After Popular Teething Toy Strangles Him

When mom Danielle Morin dropped off her 18-month-old son, Deacon, at daycare on October 5, 2016, she didn’t know that would be the last time she would see him alive.

The mother also had no idea his death was going to be caused by the harmless teething toy he wore around his neck almost every day. When Morin returned around 5pm that evening, she found paramedics desperately trying to revive her son after he had been strangled by a ‘teething necklace’ during naptime.

The child was rushed to Kaiser Permanente hospital in critical condition. Danielle Morin made the decision to remove Deacon from life support at 3:01 p.m. on Monday. Now the mother is suspicious about what really happened and she’s calling for the daycare to be shut down. She wants to know how her son could have been strangled to death under somebody else’s care.

This isn’t the first time the amber necklace has been a subject of controversy. According to SheKnows, the teething toy has been growing in popularity. It supposedly releases a natural painkiller that will soothe babies, however, there is little scientific evidence to support this claim.

These toys have been questioned before not just for strangulation issues but also because of the fact that if broken, the small pieces could become a choking hazard. The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) strongly cautions parents against using amber teething necklaces and says if parents chose to give them to their teething toddlers, they should always keep a very close eye out and never allow them to sleep with the accessory.
