A New Jersey man jumped from a bridge at 8pm Monday night while holding both his toddler sons in his arms.
Pequannock police Capt. Christopher DePuyt told New Jersey 101.5 that the 1-year-old boy suffered a bruised lung, a concussion and a fractured rib, while the 3-year-old had a concussion after the man they trusted most tried to kill them.
Both boys are being treated at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson and are expected to make a full recovery. However, their father, 37-year-old John Spincken, was pronounced dead at 9pm.
[News 12]According to records, Spincken had a history of domestic violence. Local news sources say Spincken was fighting with his wife Monday night when he stormed from their Pequannock house with both his sons. He said he had intentions to harm them.
[News 12]“When the officers found the children conscious and alert it was nothing short of a miracle, that’s for sure,” DePuyt said Tuesday. “If there is a silver lining, it’s that the kids are OK.”
Police say there was a suicide fence put up at that section of the bridge to prevent people from intentionally harming themselves, however, they believe Spincken used his car for leverage and jumped over the fence.
[WTNH]“There have been previous attempts and successful suicide attempts at that location which is why we honed in on that area once we got an approximate GPS location. There is the suicide prevention fencing which has been installed by the state that’s been there for years. But if someone is determined it’s unfortunate that things are going to happen,” DePuyt said.
