Parents Are Infuriated By 7-Year-Old’s High School Math Problem

Parents love to voice their concerns about their children’s education, especially when it comes to standardized testing.

Many say the overemphasis of standardized tests and pressure placed on children is too high these days. Others say having our children well-prepared from an early age will help us progress more quickly as a country.

One angry mother, Louise Bloxham, took to Twitter recently to air her concerns about her 7-year-old’s algebra problems. At an age where children shouldn’t even be learning multiplication yet, these second graders were receiving difficult algebra equations on standardized tests.

The problem was stated as follows:

“There were some people on a train. 19 people get off the train at the first stop. 17 people get on the train. Now there are 63 people on the train. How many people were on the train to begin with?”

One user voiced concerns that the problem placed, “ridiculous pressure on children who are 6-7 years old.” Others said the school is simply prepping the students for more rigorous math problems that can be expected in years to come.

Perhaps the real issue stems from the fact that not many of these parents were smarter than a second grader. Many were baffled by the problem. Their answers (the parents, not the students) put forward everything from 46 to zero as the solution.

The actual problem is a question of algebra in which X – 19 + 17 = 63. Therefore, the answer is 65.
