When a terrible fire broke out in a Port Richmond, Philadelphia, home, the owner’s brave dog knew exactly what to do and sprung into action.
Around 4:30am on Sunday, Andrea Bulat’s 80lb chow and golden retriever mix started barking, trying to alert neighbors of the fire. Although most neighbors knew Bulat’s dog to be very protective of her, they thought it was strange that the dog would be barking that early.
“Her dog, Che… the dog’s really protective of her,” neighbor Anthony Daly told Action News. “If you go past her house it’s ‘Bark, bark, bark, bark!’ and that kind of stuff.”
Once neighbors looked outside their windows, they saw flames. “The whole first floor was engulfed,” says Daly. When firefighters arrived, they found the dog laying on top of Bulat, who was unconscious.
“The dog stayed on her chest the whole time, which prevented her from being burned totally,” said another neighbor, Adele Butler. Bulat was then rushed to Temple University Hospital, and Che was taken to an animal hospital in Langhorne.
Bulat is currently in critical condition with burns over 50 percent of her body and Che is being treated for smoke inhalation. But, if it wasn’t for her heroic dog, it’s unlikely that Bulat would have survived. “I think because of the dog being there, that really saved her,” said Butler. “If the dog wasn’t there, she’d probably be dead.”
Another neighbor, Thomas Leszcewicz said, “I think it’s a beautiful thing, because I’ve always heard stories of where animals would help save their owners. I’ve never lived one. Now I’ve lived one. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. That’s a beautiful thing you know.”

We are praying for Bulat and Che’s recovery, although given Che’s age, it’s uncertain if this amazing dog will survive. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
