When a monster of a rattlesnake tried to bite Florida resident Tom Herbert, his dog Puppers bravely intercepted.
Herbert explains to WFLA that the incident took place outside his 2.5-acre property while Herbert and his three dogs were playing outside. A 4-foot long rattlesnake came out of nowhere and tried to attack Herbert, but his loyal dog wouldn’t allow it. “It struck out at Puppers and I immediately tried to get her away from the snake but she was insisting on getting between me and the snake,” Herbert told the news station.
After a few more strikes from the snake, all three dogs and Herbert were able to get away, and once inside, Herbert realized how lucky they all were. “I said honey, ‘I think we lucked out.’ And everything looked like nobody had gotten bit,” Herbert said.
About an hour later, Herbert explains that Puppers didn’t look right, saying her face was starting to get “real swollen.” Herbert rushed Puppers to a veterinary clinic in Winter Haven, about an hour and a half away, and after an overnight stay in intensive care, Herbert was unsure if Puppers would make it.
After several vials of anti-venom, Herbert received the good news that Puppers would indeed survive. “That dog would not let me get near the snake. She wanted to be between me and the snake, and I wanted to do the same. I wanted to keep her away from the snake,” Herbert said. While Puppers’ jaw is still swollen, she is expected to make a full recovery.
As for the debris in Herbert’s backyard, he plans to burn those very soon.
