Dog Rescue Takes Unique Approach By Designing Shelter Like A Home

Nestled in the forests of Eugene, Oregon is a cozy cottage unlike any other. What looks like a home straight from a fairy tale, is an animal rescue shelter with some big intentions.

Luvable Dog Rescue is a sanctuary for dogs. The creators behind the project know all about the importance of making a home with the right color scheme and a welcoming atmosphere. For that reason, founder Liesl Wilhardt, and her team work to create a welcoming space that looks like it’s out of a fairy tale.

The idea is based on the fact that their rescue dogs come from shelters that have a high kill rate. The dogs lived in unwelcoming environments where stress was high, and love was low. Allowing the dogs to live in a Disney fairy tale-like shelter before they find their forever homes allows the animals to develop a better attitude and find a happier life.

“A lot of dogs go downhill once they’re in a shelter,” Wilhardt said. “It’s a very stressful environment. We wanted to give them an environment that was as cozy and homelike as possible.”

Having the dogs in a friendly atmosphere also allows the shelter workers to get a sense of how the different dogs will react in a home setting, and what kinds of forever homes they would fit in.

In addition to the comfortable homes, the dogs get plenty of time outside to play with staff and other dogs, as well as explore the elements with routine hikes.
