Artist Transforms Old Farm Equipment Into Phenomenal Works Of Art

A South Dakota artist is recreating the Wild West with stunning visions sculpted from salvaged scrap metal.

John Lopez welds his figures from the iconography of days gone by. He uses rusted scraps, old wire, and salvaged metal to sculpt beautiful figures.

He also gets creative with his works, for example, the above image of a cowboy riding a dinosaur.

Lopez began as a bronze worker but discovered that salvaged metal had a great deal more flexibility.

“My favorite part about these pieces is the texture,” explains Lopez.

“I just start grabbin’ stuff from the pile and welding it, in and if you weld enough of the same thing on over and over it creates this really cool texture that I’ve never seen in these kinds of pieces before. And I think that’s what draws people in.”

Lopez’s work has a respectful attitude for the past, while also bringing a delightful image of the present.

Set on the beautiful landscape of Western America, Lopez’ work is eerily beautiful and poignant.

It’s almost nostalgic in its own way. Combined with the fact that all his work is made of  useless gears and forgotten knick knacks, the work itself contains a piece of the past.

Of course, it’s simultaneously strong and looking toward the future, like the steel stead pictured below.
