Being a new Mom is hard enough without also having to juggle work or school.

However, Sarah Thompson of Greenwood, South Carolina is struggling and juggling and making it work as a new mother and teacher. The 26-year-old woman welcomed a baby into the world days after her semester began at Lander University. In an effort to receive an applied mathematics degree as soon as possible, Thompson is taking a full load of classes until  Spring, when she plans to graduate.

When Thompson met mathematics Professor Josie Ryan days before her due date, the Professor took one look at her bulging belly and told her to please bring the baby to class anytime she needed to.

“I thought if I could make her life easier with breastfeeding and everything, why not do it?” Ryan told TODAY.

“I feel so lucky to have such an understanding professor. She even made a point to show me where the breastfeeding room is,” Thompson told TODAY.

The usual rundown of a lecture starts with fellow classmates cooing over the newborn. Then, after 5-minutes, the routine that has become ritual melts into the usual flow of a math class. Fortunately, the little guy quietly sleeps in the corner of the room. For Thompson, she says having her son in the class with her is less distracting. The knowledge that he’s safe, asleep, and in her sight is a comfort to the new Mom.

When Isiah does start to fuss and needs to be held, it’s not Thompson who rushes to his side, but Professor Ryan. It’s too much for Thompson to take notes, receive the information on the board, and act as a mother, so that’s where Professor Ryan steps in. She’s already a master of mathematics, so juggling one more duty is easy for her.

“We all have rough places in life. Sometimes a little help can make it possible for people to find their way, to succeed, to become the person they want and are meant to be,” Ryan said. “I wanted to help Sarah and Isaiah and if I can make it all a little easier, then maybe they both can go a little further.”
