Community Is Outraged When They Hear Animal Shelter Euthanized Pregnant Dog

An Oklahoma woman was furious after she dropped off a pregnant stray at an animal shelter and found out that after only a few days, the shelter had euthanized the mother and her babies.

Carol Towry of Tulsa says she had seen Brownie the dog wandering in her neighborhood for months. On the edge of giving birth, Towry says she feared for Brownie’s pups if they were born as strays. She decided to bring the expecting Mama into an animal shelter because she expected that would be the responsible thing to do. Little did she know, she was wrong!

On November 9, the self-proclaimed animal activist brought the dog into the shelter. On Wednesday, November 16, she went back to check on Brownie and was told the dog had been euthanized along with her pups.

“She was pregnant and she and her puppies were euthanized,” said Jean Letcher, manager of Tulsa Animal Welfare. Letcher said the shelter has a three-day policy. If a stray is not claimed within three days, the dog becomes property of the shelter, who can either foster or euthanize the animal if an adoption doesn’t happen.

Towry said she is especially angry because she had a few leads from friends and rescuers who could take care of the puppies. However, the shelter said they had no registered leads with their office and when presented with an overwhelming number of dogs joining the ranks soon, they had to make an unpleasant decision.

“We already have one mom with 10-day-old puppies and another mom with 10- to 15-day-old puppies in the shelter, and we did not need any more puppies,” Letcher said.
