New York artist sculpts sand castles that will put your childhood to shame.
Remember the thrill of going to the beach as a child. You’d bring all your crafty supplies: buckets, shovels, twigs, and shells. You’d spend an eternity making that sand castle perfect whether you sculpted it up from the ground or dripped the sand into a succession of miniature towers. It was a work of art and you were proud of your creation. Well, Calvin Seibert is an artist and photographer that has certainly one-upped your sand castles of your youth.
Seibert, inspired by futuristic architecture designs, has created a series of photos showing incredible works of art. He states on his Flickr page that he doesn’t go into the design with a specific idea in mind. He simply let them grow and morph into the direction they want to go. Seibert said he builds as long as time allows it, which isn’t very long when time is constantly creeping forward in the form of crashing waves.
“Building ‘sandcastles’ is a bit of a test,” Seibert said.

“Nature will always be against you and time is always running out.”

“Having to think fast and to bring it all together in the end is what I like about it.”

“I rarely start with a plan, just a vague notion of trying to do something different each time.”

“Once I begin building and forms take shape I can start to see where things are going and either follow that road or attempt to contradict it with something unexpected.”

“In my mind they are always mash-ups of influences and ideas. I see a castle, a fishing village, a modernist sculpture, a stage set for the oscars all at once.”

“When they are successful they don’t feel contained or finished. They become organic machines that might grow and expand.”

“I am always adding just one more bit and if time allowed I wouldn’t stop.”
