Nature Valley, known for producing the world’s messiest granola bar to eat in public, launched an ad recently where they asked three separate generations an easy question.

The interview was simple. “When you were a kid, what did you do for fun?” the video begins. The oldest generation, the grandparents, tell quaint stories about blueberry picking and fishing (awww).
“I found an old sign, which was big enough for me to sit on,” an elderly gentleman tells the camera. “It made a great toboggan. It was very slick; very fast.”  It conjures black-and-white images in our heads of a simpler time with simpler pleasures…

Then, the interviewer asked the same question to middle-aged people, seemingly those that would have young kids or teenagers at the moment. They too, give us warm fuzzies that lead us to clasp out hearts and have a twinkle in our eyes. They tell such precious stories of the neighborhood kids getting together and having good, clean fun by organizing a game of baseball, building a fort, or getting their tongue frozen to a pole (maybe not that last one).

And then we get to the kids’ generation. Those are the youngsters who are currently going through the trials and tribulations of pre-pubescent jolly-good times (though, if I remember correctly, they weren’t all that jolly). These kids tell the camera what they do for fun in their free time, and I’m sure you already know the answer. It’s troubling to hear, especially when it immediately follows their grandparents sepia-toned tales of frolicking with the neighborhood kids.
