Paying it forward is a social movement that has been gaining popularity the past decade.
I’m sure you’ve heard of it. When somebody does a nice thing for you, you extend the gesture to somebody else, distributing good karma in the world and throwing out the bad. Well, Rosa’s Fresh Pizza, a Philadelphia pizza shop, has turned the act of paying it forward into a strategy to feed the homeless (and get national attention).
Here’s how it works:
About a year and a half ago, a customer came into the pizza shop and asked owner Masson Waterman if he could buy a slice ahead of time. The next time a homeless person had come in looking for food, that money would be used for that person in need. Inspired by the idea, Waterson used that dollar to buy a stack of sticky notes and began asking customers to donate a dollar and write a message on a sticky. The pay-it-forward pizza program would be a way of making sure people in need always have a hot slice when they need it.
