Home renovations are rarely pleasant, especially on an old house. Anything from faulty electrical wiring, foundation issues, or even pest infestations can be revealed when you start knocking down wall and tearing up floors.
Lucky for this couple, instead of finding headaches, they found treasure.
The Arizona couple had been in the house, which had at least 6 previous owners, for two years, and were finally getting around to redoing the kitchen. In an attempt to save money, the couple decided to renovate the room themselves. When they tore down the kitchen island, they found a mysterious safe under the floor.
When the couple first moved in, they found a safe code in the back of a medicine cabinet. They never found a safe, but kept the code just in case.

After a half dozen attempts, the code finally worked, and the couple found stacks of old money, a bottle of bourbon, and a book holding notes and mysterious clues.

The bourbon was a rare 1960 bottle of James E. Pepper, and the tax stamp reads aged six years.

The safe contained stacks of neatly tide old bills, including rare $2 bills that were discontinued in 1966, and totaled a staggering $51,080.

Along with the money and bourbon, the couple also found a copy of A Guide for the Perplexed by E.F. Schumacher that held cryptic clues like underlined passages, and a map with an ‘x’ mark over Mesa, AZ.
