You know when you stare at a lava lamp and the world fades out of focus and you’re simply left staring into the wonderful ripples of colorful goo?
Now take this concept and apply it to an app and that’s the design that UX designer Peng Cheng employed. He created a stress relief app called Pause, with the intention of pausing his own anxiety. Cheng said he was suffering from serious depression and anxiety and was forced to take time out and relax for six months, while he recuperated.
In that time, Cheng came up with an idea for an app that forces its user to slow down. It’s partially a game and partially a lava lamp. The game works by having the user focus on slow, concentrated movements, while listening to peaceful sounds. Attempt to play the game while stressed or focusing your mind elsewhere and it simply won’t work.
Hear what the creators of the app had to say:
There seem to be many depressed, and over-stressed people in our world today.
Maybe we could all use Pause, or simply a pause button on life. It’s so easy to get caught in the daily hamster wheel, but if we can learn to pause and live in the moment, we might be a little bit happier as we run on the treadmill of time.
