Fat-Free Everything

Cutting all fats turned out to be a bad idea… In the 1990s, cutting fat from your diet was thought to prevent weight gain, heart disease and even some cancers. But the truth is that cutting out all fat can cause a lot of problems, including fatigue, memory issues, skin problems, and nutrient deficiencies.

Juice Only Diets

The fad here is simple: drink only juice mixed with a regiment of supplements and you’ll detox your body of toxins and other bad stuff. As straight forward as this sounds, science simply doesn’t back it up. The viral video featured a 14-year-old girl who just happened to be the singer Sparkle’s niece, engaging in sex acts with the much older R. Kelly. R. Kelly would go on to achieve varying degrees of success in his career, as would Aaliyah until her untimely death in 2001. Yet for the rest of her career, Aaliyah was forced to dodge questions about her former mentor and the curious nature of their relationship.

Since her death, Kelly himself has rarely spoken about Aaliyah. He says that he refuses to do so not just because the two remained close friends after the marriage, but out of respect to her mother and father, who had asked him personally not to mention that part of the tragic young star’s early career.

Rocking the Bedrooms

Of all the bedrooms in the house, many once housed the assorted members of what some are describing as a cult of sorts. One of Kelly’s former employees, who has chosen to remain anonymous, claims that Kelly doesn’t allow any of the alleged multiple girls who have lived at his home over the years, many freedoms.

This includes forcing them to say what he wants them to say and not allowing them to contact their families without express permission and under supervision. These women were all seeking guidance and help with their music careers before Kelly allegedly took control of their lives. If the article and the first-hand accounts are to be believed, Kelly dictates “what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in the sexual encounters that he records”.

Confiscated Phones

There are also rumors that the star has confiscated the women’s cell phones and bars all unnecessary contact with friends, family, or access to social media. Many of the parents of these girls and former Kelly employees have said that it appears as though the girls had all but vanished.

Holes in the Case

Kelly, of course, strenuously denies the story time again and the fact remained that all the women referenced were of legal age. There was also the fact that the man who wrote the article in 2017 had been covering Kelly’s allegations for the better part of two decades.

No Way

21-year-old Joycelyn Savage released a video to TMZ following the story saying “I’m not being brainwashed or anything like that…” Though she would not reveal where she happened to be speaking from in the video or what the nature of her “relationship” to R. Kelly actually was. But that was hardly the end of her story either.

Suing R. Kelly

Even if Kelly’s current girls don’t seem eager to accuse him, there have been many girls over the years who have brought suits against him. 20-year-old Faith Rodgers sued R Kelly, claiming he unlawfully gave her alcohol, assaulted her and gave her a sexually transmitted disease, and that’s not all.

Denies it All

Rodgers also said that during their year-long relationship, Kelly made her do humiliating things sexually and called her “nasty, degrading things.” He denied the claims, as he had done many times he was accused of sexual misconduct before that. So many of his denials involve accusations of the predatory pursuit of underage teens.

Victim of Abuse

Ironically, R. Kelly himself is a self-admitted victim of child sex abuse, the details of which he explains in his autobiography. The long and short of it is that he was raped by an older woman when he was only eight and that she did it again, and again in secret for years.

Too Old

Rodgers explained that she was having sex with Kelly in 1991 when she was only 15. At the time, Kelly himself was 24. The relationship only ended when she turned 18. Which may lead some people to believe that R. Kelly is only interested or was only interested in younger teenage girls. Though his M.O. has changed in recent years.

Success and Suits

Throughout all the accusations, Kelly’s career never seemed to falter at all. He released songs, many of which were successful, he won awards, and he made money; money which he used to fund his lavish lifestyle and multiple houses, including the Lakeview one.

Impressionable Intern

In 2001, Tracy Sampson, a former intern at Epic Records, sued R Kelly and accused him of inducing her “into an indecent sexual relationship” when she was 17 years old. She claimed he treated her as little more than a personal sex object before casting her aside. It was the first sign of the emerging scandal.

Controlling Personality

During her legal case, Sampson said that Kelly became more and more controlling as time went on. Until he controlled every aspect of her life including who she would see and where she went. They ended up settling out of court for an undisclosed sum, but the groundwork for future cases against Kelly was made.

Two Cases

Two more cases followed in April and May of 2002. He was sued by Patrice Jones, a Chicago woman who claims he impregnated her when she was underage. She added that she was forced to have an abortion as a result. It was settled out of court and an NDA was signed.

On Video

The second woman, Montina Woods, alleged that Kelly videotaped them having sex together without her knowledge. The tape, like the one that eventually got R. Kelly in the hottest water, was circulated and sold by bootleggers under the title R Kelly Triple-X. Woods too settled out of court and signed an NDA.

The Famous Tape

It was in June 2002 that the world finally learned about Kelly’s alleged predilections. The video of Sparkle’s unnamed niece involved intercourse, oral sex, urination, and other sexual acts. It was sent anonymously to the Chicago Sun-Times and passed on to police who had their forensic experts examine it before making an arrest.

Six Years in Wait

Kelly posted a bail of $750,000 and immediately plead not guilty to the charges, but it took a further six years for the case to eventually come to trial. When the jury finally got the chance to deliberate, they concluded that they couldn’t prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the girl on the tape was a minor and Kelly walked away scot-free.

Confiscated Camera

Despite eventually being declared innocent, the six years in between saw Kelly facing an immense amount of criticism in the press. It also saw him being charged with another 12 counts of making child pornography in Florida. He was then arrested in his holiday home and police ended up seizing a camera.

Damning Footage

Footage on the confiscated camera allegedly showed Kelly clearly having sex with what was supposedly another underage girl. Unfortunately, the charges were dropped when the presiding judge agreed with the singer’s defense team, who argued that the police had lacked sufficient evidence to justify a search.

Approaching the Press

Despite the fact that the story about Kelly’s alleged sex cult being quashed by its own supposed members, many victims eventually came forward with further allegations against the star. Jerhonda Pace even broke a non-disclosure agreement to speak to authorities about having sex with R. Kelly while she was underage.

Starved for Affection

Then there were the accusations of Kitti Jones, another woman who claimed to have been abused by Kelly. She alleged that the singer had starved her, coerced her into sexual encounters with other women, and physically abused her on more than one occasion.

Common Knowledge

Kitti was apparently a member of Kelly’s inner circle and she came forward with others to speak to the BBC in March of 2018. She, along with one of Kelly’s former friends, revealed that it was common knowledge that Kelly specifically sought out women who “looked young” when he was at parties.

New Case

In late 2018, the #MuteRKelly campaign began lobbying for Kelly’s record label RCA to sever ties with the singer. They wanted Kelly’s alleged abuses to be brought to bear and insisted that concert promoters, ticket sellers, and streaming services should all agree to demote Kelly’s songs from their playlists.

Still Performing

Thus far, many of the star’s former entourage have left his employ on the wave of negative press. The star’s lawyer, Linda Mensch, his publicist, and his personal assistant are all among those who quit. Though Mensch says that her departure was unrelated to the allegations against him.

Protests and Opinions

Despite protests outside his shows, Kelly continues to perform live. He has also been filmed stating that the campaign being levied against him was “too late.” That may not be so, as the publicity from the recent Lifetime documentary “Surviving R. Kelly” may sway public opinion against him even further.

In the meantime, another of the star’s former partners has come forward saying that the star “intentionally” infected her with a sexually transmitted disease. It’s yet another allegation that Kelly vehemently denies, but time will tell if the courts go after him again as more come forward.

Many recognizable brands have closed their doors, and looking back probably reminds us of our earlier years. So for the sake of nostalgia, we’ve compiled a list of stores you used to love, but may not know were long gone….

Sharper Image

Founded in 1977 in San Francisco, Sharper Image was known for its cool electronics and gadgets. But after filing bankruptcy in 2008, it was all downhill and all locations closed soon after.

Discovery Channel Store

The store first opened up in 1995. It sold educational gifts like books and DVDs. But shortly after 2007, the TV network closed all of its 103 brick-and-mortar locations and went strictly online.

Teavana

As of this writing, Starbucks owns a tea-friendly sister chain of locations called Teavana. However, in July 2017 the coffee giant announced it will be closing all Teavana locations.

Bonwit Teller

Originally founded in 1895, this was a luxurious department store located on New York City’s Fifth Avenue. It also had locations in Boston and California. Unfortunately, the stores closed after financial troubles in 1979. You can visit the old Manhattan location to this day. It was bought by a real estate mogul who named the old building after himself. It’s now called Trump Tower.

Sleepy’s

Sleepy’s was a popular mattress retailer with 1,000 stores across the country in 2014. But it was bought out by Mattress Firm a year later and all the stores were rebranded. But you can still find Sleepy’s online.

Media Play

This Minnesota-based chain sold all kinds of media, including videos, DVDs, video games, and music. It grew, and before closing in 2006, had 72 stores in 19 states.

Levitz Furniture

Levitz started as a furniture retailer in Pennsylvania in 1910. After establishing multiple locations, the chain filed bankruptcy twice, once in 1997 and again in 2005. Shortly after, in 2008, it closed 80 locations.

Hecht’s

This department stored spread across the eastern United States, raising 61 locations in Maryland, D.C., North Carolina, Tennessee and Pennsylvania after its original founding in 1857. But in 2005, Macy’s bought it, closed some of the locations and rebranded the rest.

Incredible Universe

This chain began after Radio Shack’s parent company Tandy decided to fund a large-scale electronics store in 1992. It grew to have 17 locations, but after only five years the idea was scrapped.

Kids “R” Us

Built as a subsidiary under the popular toy store chain Toys “R” Us in 1983, these stores sold kid’s and teen’s clothes. But after opening 146 locations by 2003, all were shut down.

Gadzooks

It took 20 years (1983 – 2003) for teen-clothing retailer Gadzooks to open 422 locations before the company was bought by Forever 21. All Gadzooks locations were either closed or converted.

Service Merchandise

Founded in 1934, this chain of catalogue showrooms sold everything from kids toys and electronics to clothing and expensive jewelry. It opened 100 stores but filed bankruptcy in 2002, and eventually closed all locations by 2004.

Sport Chalet

This sports retailer was popular in the western United States, opening in 1959 and growing to 47 locations by 2016. But the company suddenly announced it was shutting down that year, and all locations were soon closed.

Kinney Shoes

An oldie but a goodie, Kinney Shoes dominated the shoe retailing business from 1894 well into the next century, with 467 locations in total. The chain stayed afloat until 1998 when its parent company decided to close all locations.

In all lowercase letters this logo is still highly recognizable. The electronics company was founded in 1955 and built locations in 20 states. But the company fell on hard times, filing bankruptcy in 2017 and eventually closing all its stores.

Steve & Barry’s

Steve & Barry’s grew fast, opening in Long Island in 1985 and expanding to 276 locations in 39 states. Unfortunately, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and closed every store within a year.

Zany Brainy

These stores sold educational toys beginning in 1991. Within 10 years there were 187 Zany Brainy locations across the country. But in 2001 this flash-in-the-pan success filed bankruptcy and all stores phased out after the company was sold to Right Start.

A&P

This grocery chain first opened in New York in 1859. It was the largest grocer for 60 years from 1915 to 1975. As good as things got, the chain still filed bankruptcy in 2010 and again in 2015. After the second filing all locations were closed.

Linens ‘n Things

This household goods chain opened in 1975 and built more than 500 locations by 2006. However, in 2008 the chain decided to go 100 percent online and closed all of its stores.

Woolworth

Opening in 1878, this department store became world famous. After opening locations all over the globe by the 1970s, the chain lasted only about 20 years longer in the US. By 1997 all US locations of the chain were closed.

Tweeter

Starting in Boston in 1972, Tweeter was an electronics retailer that grew to more than 100 locations in 18 states. Over a 2-year span from 2007 to 2008, the chain began closing most of its stores, filed bankruptcy and by the end of the second year all locations were gone.

Thom McAn

This chain of shoe stores did quite well. It was founded in 1922 and opened 1,400 stores by the sixties. But all good things come to an end, and by 1996 every one of its store locations were closed. However, you can still find this company’s products at Sears and Kmart.

Minnie Pearl Fried Chicken

This chain of restaurants, named after comedian Minnie Pearl, competed with Kentucky Fried Chicken in the sixties. The chain grew to 40 locations and had plans for expansion, but after accounting irregularities and stock manipulation, the jig was up, and the chain closed in 1971.

Horn & Hardart

Horn & Hardat was a very old-school restaurant chain that served food and drinks via vending machine. With 157 locations, including one in New York City’s Times Square, it was quite popular, but that didn’t stop the business from nose-diving. Eventually all locations were closed. The brand lasted from 1888 to 1991.

Kaufmann’s

This Midwestern department store opened in 1871 and by 1944 had 44 locations throughout Ohio, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Macy’s bought the successful chain in 2006 and rebranded most of its stores, many were also closed in the process.

Howard Johnson’s

This popular restaurant chain had more than 1,000 locations in the US after opening in the seventies. After being bought by Marriott in 1985, only one location of this orange-roofed eatery still exists, though the property is currently, at the time of writing, for sale.

Sports Authority

This sports retailing giant had more than 200 locations in 33 states in the early 2000s. But online competition was too much and the chain filed bankruptcy in 2016. For a while Sports Authority merchandise could still be found online until Dick’s Sporting Goods bought them out completely.

Herman’s World Of Sporting Goods

This sporting goods retail chain had 259 locations in 40 states by 1993. Unfortunately, in the same year the chain entered bankruptcy and began closing stores. By 1996 all had been closed.

Circuit City

This major electronics retailer had 567 locations in 2008, but declared bankruptcy that year. By 2009, all locations had closed.

The Wiz

“Nobody Beats The Wiz!” was true until the digital revolution. In 1998, the electronics and music chain had 94 locations but by 2003 all had closed.

Tower Records

This music and music accessories superstore had 90 stores throughout the US in the nineties. But the digital revolution spelled disaster for Tower Records, and it closed all its USU locations by 2006. You can still find locations outside the country.

Ames Department Store

Ames had 700 stores in 20 states. The discount store was a customer favorite until bankruptcy and low sale sunk the brand. Stores began to close and by 2002 all were gone.

Chi-Chi’s

This Mexican restaurant chain was founded in 1975 and within 20 years had 210 locations. After filing bankruptcy several times, however, the chain was purchased by Outback Steakhouse. All locations were soon closed. Chi-Chi’s can still be found overseas, and Chi-Chi’s Mexican products can still be found in supermarkets.

Steak And Ale

Founded in 1966, this restaurant chain had 280 locations within 20 years. But by 2008, the chain had closed many locations and after filing bankruptcy all locations were closed.

Crown Books

This book seller started in 1977 and was the third largest book retailer by 1993. The family-operated company had issues however, and by the early 2000s all locations had closed.

Borders

Another book store chain met its demise shortly after the turn of the century (just as Amazon grew profitable, by the way). Founded in 1971, Borders had 511 locations throughout the country. In 2011, the company filed bankruptcy and all stores were closed.

B. Dalton Bookseller

This bookseller was founded in 1966 and after 20 years had 798 locations. Barnes & Noble bought the successful franchise, and by 2013 all B. Dalton Bookseller locations either closed or had been rebranded.

Filene’s Basement

First built in the literal basement of Filene’s Department store in Boston in 1908, this retailer grew to have 20 locations across eight states. But the economic downturn of 2007, ’08, and ’09 brought an end to this franchise, and by 2011 all locations had closed.

Kenny Rogers Roasters

Country music sensation Kenny Rogers opened these chicken restaurants (425 locations in total) in the early nineties. After filing bankruptcy in 1998, the company was bought by Nathan’s Famous. But by 2011 all store locations were closed. Some US locations of Nathan’s still sell Kenny Rogers’ items.

City Sports

This Boston-based sports retailer opened in 1983 and expanded its 27 locations across New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Vermont, and D.C. But, like many on this list, the chain filed bankruptcy and closed all locations by 2015.

Mervyn’s

This California department store started in 1949 and after 60 years in business had 189 locations across 10 states. However, in 2008 it filed bankruptcy and all locations were closed.

Warner Bros. Studio Store

This famously branded chain started in 1991. But after the AOL-Time Warner merger, the company was left without a buyer and closed shortly after. Although, locations of the store can still be found overseas.

CompUSA

This computer hardware and software retailer started in Texas in the mid-eighties. But electronics giants like Best Buy muscled them out, and by 2012 the chain was completely gone.

Crazy Eddie

Starting in Brooklyn in 1971, this electronics chain was best known for its over-the-top commercials. The 43-store chain struggled in the early 2000s however, and by 2009 all had closed.

Virgin Megastore

Beginning in London in 1971, Virgin opened its first store in LA in 1992. The chain grew to 23 locations, but as compact discs went by the wayside, so did the company. It closed all of its stores by 2009.

KB Toys

Beginning in Massachusetts in 1992, KB Toys had 1,300 locations in every state in the US. In 2009, Toys “R” Us bought the rights to the chain. Soon after all stores were closed.

FAO Schwarz

FAO Schwarz, the oldest toy store in the country, began operations in 1862. By 2000 FAO Schwarz had 40 locations across the country, including its iconic location on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. Toys “R” Us bought this chain out as well, and all locations closed by 2015.

All-Star Cafe

Opening for the first time in 1995, this restaurant chain had athlete investors such as Tiger Woods, Ken Griffey Jr., Wayne Gretzky, Joe Montana and Shaquille O’Neal. But all that star power just wasn’t enough and the chain closed all locations in 2007.

Marshall Field’s

Though it may be a spiritual site for many the world over, Jerusalem remains a risky destination for tourists. Thanks to the Internet, more and more people are learning about this plight and acting to do something about it. Many have actually used the power of the Internet to raise funds and awareness for those affected. As a result, many homeless people have actually gained a fair amount of helpful notoriety as well…

Handing Out Resumes

People driving along the highway in Silicon Valley noticed something unusual that day. A man, apparently homeless, handing out resumes to anyone who would take one. David Cásarez had apparently cashed out his 401(k) and driven to CA in order to live his dream of starting a tech startup. He failed and found himself looking for a home and a job not long after.

Deserving of a Chance

Luckily for him, a number of the folks who took the resumes learned of the viral story and actually considered giving him a chance. David came out of his fifteen minutes with an impressive 200 job offers and many opportunities that he’s still trying to sort out. More than anything, he is happy that people decided to give him a chance.

Golden Voice

In 2011, the Internet was treated to the angelic, golden-voiced homeless man named Ted Williams. Ted lived in Columbus, Ohio and had, despite his circumstances, a ready-for-radio baritone. Once people got wind of it, there was an outpouring of support from folks looking to get him onto TV. And luckily for Ted, they did just that.

Presidential Campaign

In 2013, after his fifteen minutes were up, he narrated Houseless, a film about home­lessness. Ted has also used his golden voice for voice-overs and even announced live events, and then quickly quit a presidential campaign. His main platform was simple, he wanted to deal with the problems facing homeless military veterans. It makes perfect sense if you think about it.

Out of Gas

In 2018, we heard a heartwarming story about Kate McClure and her boyfriend Mark D’Amico, who became friendly with a homeless man named Johnny Bobbitt after he’d spent his last $20 on gas for Kate when her car broke down. Since he’d helped them, they wanted to help him get back on his feet, so they started a GoFundMe and raised nearly $400 thousand for the man.

A Sham

There was just one problem, they didn’t give him the money. The couple surpassed their goal immensely but ended up only giving Bobbitt $75,000 of the donated funds. The homeless Samaritan then accused them of using the rest as a personal piggy bank. Meanwhile, they are all of them going to court and Bobbitt is still very much homeless. There’s even some proof that it may have all been a scam from the start.

Getting Gas

Tony Carlson, a police officer with the Tallahassee Police Department, was pulling into a gas station when he noticed something peculiar. A homeless man was standing nearby with an electric razor plugged into the outside wall of the gas station. He approached the man and noticed that the gentleman was quite obviously homeless and quite obviously struggling with the razor.

A Clean Shave

The man, whose name was Phil, explained that he’d had an interview at McDonald’s and needed to look more presentable. Officer Carlson helped tighten a screw on the razor and then helped shave his beard. Afterward, when the story went viral, Senator Marco Rubio’s an office helped Phil acquire the necessary paperwork to complete his job application. McDonald’s hired him.

Viral Offers

Matt Cordoza was at Clearwater Beach when he met a shirtless homeless man. After speaking with him for a while, Cordoza realized he was cold and then literally gave him the shirt off his back, his hoodie to be precise. The story went viral and the man, whose name turned out to be Rocky Been, ended up getting a rash of support from his community.

New Job, New Lease

That one, seemingly innocuous act ended up garnering a huge response. People wanted to help old Rocky Been and eventually, Crabby’s Bar and Grill in Clearwater Beach offered him a job. He even got a GoFundMe set up for himself so he could get temporary shelter. Rocky’s life changed almost overnight.

Another Close Shave

56-year-old homeless New Yorker, Anthony Torres has had a rough life. Recently, a video of him shaving on a train went viral and the world learned all about Torres recent struggles as a result. This was not his goal of course, Torres was simply shaving on the train because he had found himself in a homeless shelter of late and couldn’t do it there.

Screwed Up

“My life is all screwed up. That’s the reason I was shaving on the train,” the homeless man told the Associated Press as he lamented the world laughing at his misfortunes. Thankfully, he still eventually made his way to southern New Jersey to stay with his brother. The person who originally posted the video has since deleted it, but not before trying to license it to media outlets.

Penny For a Song

When homeless crooner James Percell first showed up on the Internet a few years back, he followed his performance by insisting that he had once been a backup singer for R&B groups such as Jodeci and the hip-hoppers C+C Music Factory. Given that his song “Everything Must Change” has had over 1 million views, that may well be the case.

Judge Not

The man eventually learned of his notoriety and made a run at fame and fortune by auditioning for TV’s “X-Factor.” He was rejected, sadly, but Percell blames that rejection on the fact that he is homeless because if they can’t contact him, how would they invite him back? He’s not giving up though, he aims to try auditioning again once he’s back on his feet.

Telling her Story

In November of 2018, a homeless St. Louis woman was interviewed on the street and it changed her life. Melena Johnson spoke of her life over the previous year, living on the streets with her one year old son. She spoke of how authorities had boarded up the home she’d lived in and left her wandering the streets with a baby.

A Reprieve

The video reached millions and as a result, people flocked in from hundreds of miles away to help. So far, Melena has had the opportunity to stay in a downtown hotel for a few weeks, has been given groceries, clothes, and other necessities, and has felt more love than she’s felt in the past 40-something years of her life.

Coffee Break

A man was sitting at his local Starbucks, drinking coffee and using the free WIFI, when a homeless man and his dog came trudging into the establishment. Eventually, the man went over and spoke to the man who told him that he and his dog Legacy had walked 60 miles from Seattle to Tumwater over the last few days. He also learned that the man was a Christian, and very religious.

Pounding the Pavement

When the man overheard the guy tell his dog they’d get new shoes for the rest of their journey, he offered to buy him a meal and give him a pair of new boots. He even offered to give the guy a pair of clean socks from the laundry he’d had in his car. As the man walked away, he told his dog, “I told you God was going to take care of us.”

Tickling the Ivories

51-year-old Donald Gould was unknown to most of the world up until a few years ago. An ex-Marine and native Floridian, Donald lost his wife in 1998 and turned to drugs as a result. He became estranged from his son and had been living on the street for six years before some passersby heard him playing the piano outside a nearby shop.

Homeless Virtuoso

Someone uploaded a video of this amazing talent and eventually, a crowdfunding page was formed. They raised over $11,000 in the first few weeks alone and plan to raise over $50,000 so he can get a car and perhaps take his musical skills somewhere that might prove more lucrative than panhandling in the panhandle.

Homeless at Christmas

Little Poppy Dunleavy of Ireland was distraught and for good reason. Leanne, her desperate mother, had just delivered the bad news, the family was going to be homeless for Christmas. Poppy cried out that she missed their dog Milly and her mother tried to reassure her that when they got a new house, they’d get a new dog, but it was hard to ignore the heartbreaking reaction.

Kind Words

Leanne recorded Poppy’s emotional reaction from their temporary accommodations in order to perhaps get help from the Internet. Many people contacted Poppy and offered words of comfort and reassurance. Hopefully, 2019 will prove a much better year for Leanne and Poppy and will see them back on their feet.

Soggy Donuts

A video came out recently which showed a Syracuse, NY Dunkin’ Donuts employee pouring water on a sleeping homeless man sitting at a table inside the store. The employee in the video chastised the young man, identified as Jeremy Dufresne, and warned him about doing it again. The video was posted to Facebook and several employees were fired as a result.

Forgiveness

Dunkin’ Donuts offered Dufresne a sincere apology, but it wasn’t needed, because the man had already forgiven the employee for taking out whatever personal problems he had on him. A GoFundMe campaign was started for Dufresne shortly after the video went viral and has raised more than $3,000 to help the man try and fix his life.

Pakistani Family

The Hindu Bulletin recently released a photo of a homeless Pakistani family sleeping by the roadside on Diwali, a Hindu holiday. The family was surrounded by toys and jute baskets, which they had obviously been trying to sell to no avail as no customers were stopping by that night. The man who took the picture decided to wake them up and offer to help.

A Generous Offer

The man ended up taking the family out to dinner and then took them shopping. In addition to getting them a few necessities, he also helped to ensure that the children were admitted to the school. The picture post also prompted a clothing drive for the family and the hope is that they will continue to improve as time goes on.

Thrown Away

This next story is enough to make even the most cynical of readers cringe with anger. This video shows an Oakland, California jogger disparaging a homeless man and then throwing all of that man’s belongings not only into the garbage but into the nearby Lake Merritt. Onlookers can be heard asking the man incredulously what he’s doing to which he replies, “Picking up the trash. What do want me to do? It was spilling everywhere.”

Taking Out the Trash

The video was posted on social media and seen by millions, many of whom agreed that the jogger’s actions were “awful, cruel, and cold.” That said, for every defender of the homeless man, there were many who actually sided with the jogger, stating that the Bay Area is overrun with the homeless and that something needed to be done.

A Man and his Dog

Timothy Lucas had been going through a rough time of it and before he knew what hit him, he and his dog Moe had found themselves homeless. Though the situation was only temporary, he still needed someone to take Moe for the winter while he made his way around and tried to get back on his feet. Unlike many of these stories, Lucas himself actually reached out to share his story with the media.

Homeless to Home

As a result, he received more than 1,000 emails and hundreds of phone calls into his case worker’s voicemail box. He was overwhelmed by the kindness and though he didn’t accept a job off the bat, got many offers from interested parties. He and Moe were soon offered a place to stay in downtown Lafayette and will soon be back on the right path.

John’s Benchmark

John had been homeless for a few years and was sleeping on a bench when he happened upon a few roofers gearing up for a job in London. The men came by with a cup of tea and offered him some work. If he came and helped them the next day, they’d pay him £15, more money than he ever thought possible. They had never seen someone more happy to be at work.

Helping Out

When the work was done, they invited John to help work again and before long, the story went viral. The Hertfordshire roofing company lauded the roofers for their selfless gesture and for sharing their own pay in order to help John out. With any luck, John might find himself a full-time job as a result.

Sharp-Dressed Man

54-year-old former soldier and homeless veteran Jim Wolf recently came into the spotlight when he went from bearded and bedraggled to well-groomed and sharply-dressed. The viral video was the altruistic brainchild of producer Rob Bliss who made it in order to raise awareness and funds for a Grand Rapids homeless charity named Degage Ministries.

Veteran’s Day

After its Veterans Day posting, Rob’s chosen charity received $50,000 in donations and Jim himself actually began attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He has also moved in with his sister and is staying off the streets. It seems like those 15 minutes of viral fame count for a lot when you’re homeless.

Honesty Pays

When homeless man Glen James called the police one weekend and explained what he had found, they were understandably skeptical. He told them that he’d found a backpack containing cash and travelers’ checks, and he didn’t know what to do with it. Eventually, the police tracked down Ethan Whittington, the bag’s owner and returned the money to him.

Every Donation Helps

Whittington wanted to help the man who’d been honest enough to return it. This wasn’t just about rewarding an honest man though, the viral story that proceeded it was more about the fact that even those in desperation can look past that to help others. A donation fund soon followed as well and Mr. James seems to be doing OK as a result.

Unable to Ignore

Zachary Tanaleon was walking Kapolei, Hawaii, when he noticed an elderly homeless woman sitting near Zippy’s restaurant. He was going to just walk off and dismiss the sighting, but decided that he couldn’t just turn a blind eye. He bent down and offered to buy her a meal at Zippy’s which she graciously accepted.

A Much-Needed Meal

The woman, Donna Ogawa, opted to get a coffee and donuts instead of a full meal. A customer watched what was happening and documented the act of kindness so that everyone could see what happens when someone steps up to help. Miss Ogawa herself thanked the good Samaritan and though she is still homeless, is grateful for the attention the viral story has brought regarding her plight.
