It always makes me smile to see people honoring our nation’s soldiers, especially around the holidays, yet so many people don’t realize exactly what they sacrifice to protect the rest of us.
For many men and women of the military, the most difficult part about their job isn’t knowing whether or not they’ll make it home. It’s the time spent away from their loved ones.
Days spent with family and friends that most people take for granted, like holidays, anniversaries, graduations, new babies, and as will see in the following video, birthdays can be especially difficult to be so far away from home.
That’s why it was so important for American soldier and single father Joshua Carr to get home from deployment to surprise his little girl on her special day.

“#1 Perk of returning from Afghanistan around your 3 year old’s birthday.” Carr wrote on YouTube.
Being away from his main lady must have been really tough for this Dad, but knowing she was safe at home with his mother gave him the opportunity to make Bridget’s birthday one she’d never forget.
With help from Grandma, Carr wrapped up a giant box and hid inside, waiting for the moment Bridget would tear it open at her birthday party.

Just like 3-year-old Karis Ogleby, who famously broke military protocol when her Daddy returned home from active duty, little Bridget was overwhelmed with joy by the surprise reunion.
“It was met with skepticism from my family members at first (worried she would be scared when I popped out), but I insisted and luckily for us everything turned out great.” Carr told Stars and Stripes.

“Her reaction was certainly priceless and more than I expected.”
