Not only does he save lives on the job, this heroic also saved the day for hundreds at a recent basketball game.

Police Officer Carlton Smith gave a fabulous impromptu performance of the Star-Spangled Banner at a recent West Virginia University and University of Kansas basketball game. When Leslie Dorchester, the scheduled singer, couldn’t make it due to being stuck in a snowstorm, Smith was given five minutes to prepare.

“Any chance I get to do the national anthem is always a big deal to me,” Smith told Inside Edition as he recalled his performance. “I was just basically hoping I didn’t mess it up too much.”

Smith had been working security during the game in West Virginia, so he was not expecting to be called upon for performing this patriotic duty.

However, he killed it with his performance, which was caught on video. Afterwards, we see the crowd erupting in cheers and applauding the officer as he walks from the court.

Watch the officer totally nail it with barely any preparation:

But Smith wasn’t just called upon just by coincidence.

When the scheduled singer didn’t show up, someone remembered Smith was a 2014 American Idol contestant. While working as a police officer is his day job, the officer with a powerful set of pipes said singing is his real passion.

Hopefully, this man will make all his dreams come true. If you enjoyed his patriotic performance and would like to help him achieve those dreams, please SHARE with friends and family!
