Anyone who has ever lost a pet knows that their death is so much more. You are losing a best friend, family member and many times, your protector, but for Canton, Ohio police officer Ryan Davis, losing his German shepherd was so much more.

The Davis family adopted their dog Jethro as an 8-month-old puppy. Jethro grew up with the Davis children and was a fun, loving friend to all, but during the day, the German shepherd would seamlessly transition into a completely different animal.

Jethro was not just Officer Davis’ canine companion, he was his K-9 partner on the job, too.

The brave, committed police dog went into any situation without fear, including the final call that ended up in unthinkable tragedy.

Earlier this year, Officers Davis and Jethro checked in on a break-in at a local grocery store, when the robber opened fire on them and hit Jethro, who was protecting his owner, with three bullets.

What came next can only prove how special this K-9 officer truly was, not just to Davis and his family, but the entire Canton, Ohio community.

“He left a hole that will never be filled,” Davis says with tears in his eyes about the dog he wishes he could trade places with in the following interview from CBS. “He gave his life for me.”
