A fan at the Pittsburgh Pirates game had a close encounter with a bat that flew into the stands on Saturday.

The little boy was nearly struck in the face by the bat as it slipped from a players grip and went flying in the air. The boy was on his phone at the time and didn’t see the bat heading towards him.

Luckily, a real-life hero shielded the blow from the bat who reached out in front of the boy’s face and blocked the bat with his arm.

The terrifying incident was caught on camera, and it showed Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Danny Ortiz losing his hold on the bat and flying into the stands at the Braves’ spring training stadium.

After the game, Ortiz told the paper that he had no idea he had set off a dramatic sequence of events until he got home.

“I didn’t know what happened, if it (hurt) the boy or anything,” he said. “I went home and my wife said to me, ‘You almost killed that kid!'”

The photo below shows the bat doing a 180 after it misses the boy’s face.

This was an incredibly close call, and we are happy that no one was hurt.

It reminds us of this moment below where a dad caught a foul ball while holding his baby:

Major League Baseball has suggested that all clubs extend the area of seating covered by protective netting, and they warn fans who sit close to the field that they are at risk of being hit by a bat or foul ball.
