Castaways is a documentary series that documents the characters of a rehabilitation program that pairs inmates with unwanted dogs. The Humane Society has estimated that animal shelters care for six million dogs each year in the US. Pets who are homeless, neglected, and abandoned are kept caged in shelters with the goal of being adopted, however, about 3-4million dogs, never find a home and must be euthanized.
In this program, inmates train these unwanted dogs to be adopted as a family pet or even to be a service dog . The documentary shows the life changing effects of this unlikely bond while both man and dog try to help each other.
In the video below, a dog named Esther is shown at first terrified and severely abused after being in a puppy mill. Esther is brought to the Prison-trained K-9 Companion Program, and paired with Jason, a prison inmate. Over the course of the training program, Jason bonds with Esther and explains how rewarding the experience has been to see Esther transform. Jason explained:
“Esther is a dog that has definitely stolen my heart, and I’m very sad to see her leaving today. I love her very much. She’s been a great learning experience for me, and I hope that I’ve been able to help her have a happy life.”
