It may look like a storybook wedding, but there’s more to this story than first meets the eye…

As you can see in this shocking social experiment filmed in New York City’s Times Square, Americans aren’t afraid to show their true colors when they see a child bride barely out of middle school. However, even though we don’t hear about this often here in the states, UNICEF reports that 15 million children will be married each year before their 18th birthdays.

In the following heartwrenching PSA, UNICEF, together with Bridal Musings, hopes to capture your attention with a powerful wedding video that can only be described as “sadly ever after”. At first, everything about this wedding is picturesque, but when you take a closer look, you’ll notice the bride is not gleaming like she should be on her wedding day.

Lilly is only 11 years old and she would much rather play with her teddy bear and coloring book than marry John, a man more than three times her age. Their story proves that most marriages don’t have happy endings.

“A girl who is married as a child is more likely to be out of school, experience domestic violence and become infected with HIV/AIDS.” Bridal Musings wrote. “She is more likely to have children when she herself is still a child, and is far more likely to die due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
