Everybody’s favorite overpriced latte chain is making news again, and this time it has us cheering.

You may remember that time a few months ago when the news went crazy about the Starbucks Christmas cup design. You may also recall the less dramatic side of news when a Starbucks barista got some attention for doing this to a homeless man.

So, in true Starbucks fashion, a month can’t go by without the chain making headlines. This week, the topic of discussion has to do with feeding the underprivileged. The massive coffee chain announced their plans to donate 100% of their leftover food to those in need through an AWESOME partnership with various nonprofit organizations.

In a press release the company stated, “Today, Starbucks is announcing FoodShare – a program to donate ready-to-eat meals to food banks from its 7,600 company-operated stores in the U.S. Initially, this will be accomplished through an existing collaboration with Food Donation Connection and a new partnership with Feeding America.”

“When we thought about our vast store footprint across the U.S. and the impact we could make, it put a fire under us to figure out how to donate this food instead of throwing it away,” said Jane Maly, brand manager, Starbucks Food team. Maly said the team is developing safe, effective ways to transport the food without it perishing.

News like this is so exciting because when a massive company takes initiative, smaller ones are forced to follow. Soon, we will live in a world where food waste is going down and full bellies are going up.
