David and Nicky Beard are a married gay couple from New Zealand who dreamed of being fathers and although they recently had their wish granted in three-fold, they couldn’t imagine the horror they’re currently wrapped up in.
The Beards recently traveled to Mexico for the birth of their “triplings”, two boys and one girl, born from the same sperm and egg, but from two different surrogate mothers.
[Facebook]Yet when they arrived, they realized they had been scammed by their surrogacy agency and would have to repay about $75,000 USD in medical and legal costs for their three newborns, Kelly, Blake, and Lachlan, who was born prematurely and racked up extra medical expenses.
[Stuff.co.nz]To make matters even more of a nightmare, Mexico recently banned international surrogacy for gay couples and have been told they can’t leave the country with their babies.
[Facebook]The New Zealand Ministry of Social Development Director of International Casework Paula Attrill told BuzzFeed that international surrogacy cases can be highly complicated and take a long time to figure out.
[Givealittle.co.nz]“The children are Mexican citizens. They require Mexican passports to travel,” said Attrill. “They also require exit visas from Mexico and cannot travel without a passport or the required visas.” The couple must now apply to adopt the children in New Zealand family court.
