51-Year-Old Mom Acts As Surrogate For Her Own Granddaughter

Thirty-two years after giving birth to her daughter, Mandy Stephens, Sherri Dickson was able to bless her with the greatest gift of all.

“Watching your child lose a child is the definition of sadness,” Dickson told Good Morning America. “I can’t describe it any other way. It breaks your heart.” After Mandy struggled with fertility and her first pregnancy ended early, doctors warned her and husband Jamie that they could expect similar high risks if they tried again.

That’s when the couple started looking into adoption and surrogacy, and were surprised when Sherri and her younger daughter volunteered to carry Mandy’s baby.

After meeting with doctors who decided Mandy’s mom, who hadn’t yet gone through menopause and had three healthy pregnancies, would be better mentally equipped to carry the child, but there was one side effect no one saw coming.

Sherri suffers from multiple sclerosis and was shocked when instead of leading to medical complications, the pregnancy put her disease into remission.

Although the mom told Good Morning America delivering at 51 was much more difficult than the last time when she was 33, she was so happy to bring her granddaughter, Myla, into the world.

“I don’t mind being pregnant,” she told KYFR-TV. “If It was something I could do for her, why not.”
