When Lacey Dunkin first thought about becoming a mom, all she could envision in her head was little boys.
Dunkin, who is 32 lives in Fresno, California and she became certified as a foster parent in 2011. Although she believed her prospects of receiving a foster child were slim because she is single, she got the surprise she’d been waiting for 3 months later.
Dunkin received a call from Aspiranet, a family-services agency in California, and they said there was a foster-care emergency placement: four sisters- Sophia, age 5, twins Natalie and Melanie, age 2, and Kaylee, age 1.
“I was barely aware, but I said yes,” Dunkin told parents.com. And within a couple of hours, Dunkin had four confused girls darting around her living room.
The next morning, Dunkin prepared to take the eldest daughter Sophia to kindergarten class, when she asked if Dunkin had any daughters and if she could be her daughter. This broke Dunkin’s heart.
Later that day, Dunkin learned the girls had a sibling, Lea, born the night before. Lea wound up going to another foster family temporarily, but nine months later, all four sisters went back to their birth mother. About one month ago, the girls’ birth mom decided it would be too difficult for her to care for them, so she called Dunkin and asked if she would take all 5 girls (including Lea).

“I immediately said yes,” Dunkin recalled.
But there was one more surprise: The girls’ birth mother was expecting again- a girl named Cecily who was born in September. She eventually went on to live with Dunkin and they have been a happy family ever since.
“I want people to know that foster children are not bad, they’re not broken,” says Dunkin. “Children are resilient, and want and need a loving home.”
