A simple school assignment has turned into so much more after a young boy brought his work home to show his parents.
In a post that has gone viral since being shared by the National Autism Association on Facebook, we learn what life is life through the eyes of Benjamin Giroux, a 10-year-old boy from New York who is on the Autism spectrum.
The assignment was pretty easy for the high-functioning fifth grader to accomplish: write a poem starting with the words “I am”. Yet when you reading the boy’s eye-opening words, it’s clear he went above and beyond what his teacher requested.
Ben’s dad Sonny Giroux told The Huffington Post his son’s brought he and his wife to tears when they read it. “We were both so proud, and yet so heartbroken, that this was how he felt,” he said. Sonny and his wife decided to share the poem with the National Autism Association to show his young son he wasn’t alone.
Since being posted on Facebook, the post has been shared nearly 30,000 times and inspired countless people to comment well wishes and share their own experiences. Sonny said the incredible feedback has shown his son he truly does fit in.
