A young black bear with a bucket stuck over its head was seen roaming area Western Pennsylvania for over a month.
Residents and onlookers even began referring to the poor bear as the “Bucket Bear,” because they felt so bad for him.
This bucket that was stuck on the bear’s head was actually a “maxi,” which is a type of air bag used to provide cushioning between a tractor and a trailer. The helpless bear was seen knocking its head into objects in its path and it was totally blinded by this unfortunate helmet.
Once the Pennsylvania Game Commission had become aware of the “Bucket Bear,” the set up a trap to capture him, although they had been unsuccessful.
Pennsylvania resident Krissy Elder created Facebook campaign called Save the Bucket Bear, to draw attention to this young bear’s situation, so he can be helped before its too late. The following day, animal rescue volunteers Dean Hornberger and Samantha Eigenbrog saw the post, and set out to free the bear.
The couple searched the woods to find the bear, and finally found him.
In the incredible and heart-racing video below, Hornberger tried to tug the bucket off the bear’s head, but he was unsuccessful. After three more rescuers arrived, the crew tackled and piled on top of the bear to keep him from running away. After multiple attempts, they were finally able to pull the bear’s head free.
A few rescuers suffered scratches from the bear’s claws, but it was ok, since they saved this animal’s life.
