Even if you think you know everything about your family’s history, chances are pretty great that you will discover something you never even thought about if you go digging through the past.

That’s exactly what happened when a Post Falls, Idaho man decided to do a little research about his ancestry. When Conrad Underdahl started looking at his family tree, he noticed something strange. He had to go back generations and generations before finding a female born into the Underdahl family.

For more than 100 years, Conrad’s family only produced men, a coincidental tradition that seemed like it would never end. So you can imagine the excitement when one of Conrad’s four sons, finally got the news everyone had been waiting for. “Everyone has been hoping for a girl,” Scott Underdahl told the Coeur d’ Alene Press. “I didn’t know what an Underdahl girl looked like.”

Scott and his wife Ashton, who have a toddler son, Asher, were thrilled to give the first girl the Underdahl name since 1914, when baby Aurelia was born, second to her great-great-aunt Bernice.

“Maybe it took more than 100 years to create perfection,” excited grandfather Conrad Underdahl told Coeur d’ Alene Press. “She’s a cutie. We’ve been spoiling her a bit because it’s just different finally holding a baby girl.”

Even mom and dad said they were expecting a boy, although they couldn’t be happier. “I wasn’t mentally prepared for a girl,” said Ashton. “Pink was a shock. Headbands, the girl aisle is overwhelming.”
