Sadie is a 4-year-old little girl who suffers from Type 1 diabetes and Down syndrome.

Sadie’s parents got her a very special Labrador retriever named Hero to let the family know when her sugars are too high or too low. Hero is a diabetic alert dog and when Sadie’s blood sugars drop below 100, Hero will whine or nose or paw Sadie’s parents to the left hand to let them know.

When her blood sugar is above 200, Hero lets her parents know using the same tricks, but this time, on their right hand.

I’ll hold out my hands and say, what is it? and he’ll paw for, paw my left hand for a low, and he’ll nose my right hand for a high,” Sadie’s mom Michelle explains to KUTV.

However, this past December, Hero really lived up to his name. Sadie was at school in her special needs class at Deerfield Elementary, while Hero was at home in Please Grove, which is more than five miles away. Hero began to act out, trying to warn Michelle that Sadie’s blood sugar levels were dropping, but this didn’t make sense to Michelle, being that her daughter was miles away.

“He’s normally a very quiet dog. Whining is not in his protocol. But he just started whining and he would not stop,” Michelle said.

The concerned mom decided to contact the school and when her teacher checked Sadie’s numbers they were fine. Then, just 30 minutes later when she tested her again, the teacher saw they went down. Her numbers dropped from 122 to 82 in just 30 minutes, which was nearing a dangerous place for little Sadie. Lows are more dangerous because Sadie can go into a diabetic coma right away and she could die if she stayed low for too long.

This blew everyone’s mind. How could this diabetic alert dog smell that Sadie was low from 5 miles away, the family wondered.

KUTV asked Hero’s trainer, KC Owens, who said ,”How do dogs know when their owners are coming home?” Owens asked. “There’s another piece of it, that I call, ‘God only knows’.”

Sadie’s mom agreed. “I can’t explain it. It’s a God thing. I think it’s like mother’s intuition. These dogs have abilities and senses beyond our understanding,” she said.

One thing’s for sure: they are happy and grateful to have Hero, who is the one who always saves Sadie.

“I’ve always called Sadie our little angel, and I think Hero was a little angel sent into our lives to watch over her,” dad said.
