As Jessica Glatt got older, she realized how lucky she was to have been born.

Glatt is the grandchild of two Holocaust survivors, who miraculously made it through the Holocaust which lasted from 1933-1945. They not only survived, but went on to live happy and healthy lives, and even witnessed the birth of their great-granddaughter, Harli. The moment was so significant that Glatt hired a photographer to take a photo of her grandpa, holding Harli, as she explained to kveller.com

In the photo below, you see Harli holding her great-grandfather’s arm that was etched with his concentration camp tattoo from when he was barely a teenager.

Glatt’s grandfather, Max Durst, 89 and her grandmother, Anna Durst, 86, are their immediate family’s sole survivors of the Holocaust.

“There is simply no explanation for the inexplicable,” Glatt wrote for Kveller. “Yet they survived.”

Glatt’s grandfather needed some convincing to have the photos of his tattooed arm taken with Harli, but Glatt felt strongly that “this mark of evil…also radiates the very essence of survival.” The resulting photograph, she says, is “beautiful. It is painful. It is my history and my future inextricably linked.”

Now, Glatt and her husband Brian have three children, Harli, now 6, Skylar, 3 and Carter, 1.

When Glatt first posted the photo of Harli and Max to Facebook, she received an overwhelmingly positive response from people. And after she gave her grandparents a quick lesson on how to use Facebook, they were able to scroll through the comments themselves. Glatt told Kveller that her grandmother had tears in her eyes as she and her grandfather read through the comments, and they read until they couldn’t stay awake any longer.

The photo was posted last year to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, which starts tonight.

“With each passing year, there are fewer [Holocaust] survivors left to tell their stories,” Glatt said.

She hopes the photograph of Harli and her grandfather will help the world to never forget the six million people lost, according to Today.com.
