When Lea Serres was in high school, she went through something that no one should ever have to go through.
She learned her boyfriend, who we will refer to as Jacob, was suicidal. Jacob was Lea’s love, and he was the one person who Lea felt truly understood her emotions. To learn this news, Lea was devastated. Having suffered from anxiety and depression herself, Lea could relate to some of the things Jacob was going through, but this was something that she couldn’t understand.
Trying desperately to help Jacob, Lea researched all she could and suggested fun activities for them to try, to help Jacob get out of his own head.
But soon, Lea came to the harsh reality that she could not ‘fix’ Jacob, as much as she wanted to.
Once Jacob’s family, friends and teachers found out what he was going through, his parents decided that he and Lea were over. The problem was, no one told Lea this. His parents confiscated his phone and computer and pulled him out of school, and Lea had no way of contacting him. She thought he was dead.
Lea locked herself in her basement and was hysterical for weeks.
“I would hide in the basement for hours sobbing and screaming into pillows until I was too exhausted to stay awake anymore,” Lea told LifeDaily.
After hitting rock bottom herself, Lea turned to music, which has been an outlet for her since she was 4-years-old. She spent her entire life’s savings on recording equipment, tore her room apart, and built herself a home recording studio. Through music, Lea channeled her depressive thoughts and turned them into “tangible sadness.” She soon realized that music was what she was always meant to do.
After going to a summer high school program, and falling in love with producing, Lea got into the coveted New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recording Music, and she is now just weeks away from graduating. Lea has turned her raw, difficult experience into music that she hopes others can relate to, and will inspire them to know that everything will be “okay.”
Joining forces with two other talented women, Lexi Todd and Sabrina Reitman, the trio calls themselves SHIMASHIMA. They’re releasing their first single, Are You Okay, off their debut EP, Medusoza, which can be heard here.

“Listening to one of our songs is like listening to your best friends disclose the most personal details from the backs of their brains,” SHIMASHIMA says.
SHIMASHIMA is giving the world real, raw and authentic music, and it’s something we can’t get enough of.
Lea says she hasn’t spoken to Jacob in years, but adds, “I hope with all of my heart that he was able to find peace for himself as well.”
