Any dog owner knows that it’s especially important to care for your dog in the hot summer months.

Besides making sure your pet has lots of water, it’s also important to watch them so they don’t overheat. While you should NEVER leave your dog in a hot car, you also need to be careful when allowing them to walk on hot pavement.

There’s one general rule of thumb to go by- if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pets.

“Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet’s paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible,” the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) urged.

Moon Valley Canine Training shares one simple test to see if the pavement is too hot:

Put the back of your hand on the pavement and if you can’t keep it there for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet. You can also get your dog booties or dog paw wax designed protect your dog’s paws from the heat.
