Many moms spend about 18 years raising their kids and seeing them every single day, which is why it can be so painful for mothers when their kids do decide to leave home.
Aside from not knowing if her son was safe during his time in the army, the hardest thing for mom Cheri Hancock was not being able to see her son, Specialist Kyle Kracht, whenever she wished after he left home and joined the Army four and a half years ago.
Kracht was able to keep in touch with his mom while he was away through Skype and phone calls, but nothing ever came close to actually seeing each other in real life. “It gets to be a point where it’s just, there’s nothing like human contact with the ones you love,” Kracht said.
Kracht recently came home, and is planning to live in Georgia, but when Kracht’s grandparents called him up and offered him their frequent flyer miles, he knew it was the perfect opportunity to surprise mom with a visit. “I didn’t want to like walk into her work,” said Kracht, who ultimately decided to simply wait at home for his mom. “I just wanted to be sitting here casually, and just have her walk in and be like, ‘What’s up mom? Hey.’”
“I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve gone over it in my head what she might do,” Kracht said. “I didn’t think she was gonna scream and then yell at me and ask me why I was here. I didn’t think I would have to chase after her to give her a hug, but it was way, way more than I expected.”
“I never thought that anybody would do that to me, and so when I walked in I felt like I was in a dream,” Cheri said of the emotional moment. “I couldn’t believe it, I really couldn’t believe it.”
