Every parent knows how important it is to find a babysitter you can both trust and depend on, which is why one mom was taking her time and interviewing a few different babysitters before picking the right one.
North Carolina-based mom Andrea Owen decided to hire a babysitter for the summer, yet as she spoke to a few different girls, she started to notice a shocking trend when the topic of payment came up, and couldn’t help but vent on social media about her experience.
When Owen sat down with the teenage girl and asked what her hourly rate was, she couldn’t believe the answer. “I like to ask them first what their hourly rate is,” she said. “My experience in this is usually the girls say, ‘Whatever you want to pay me is fine.'”
While this might not seem like a huge deal to anyone other parents, the life coach believes it’s setting girls up to be afraid to ask for what they deserve in the workplace. “It may sound crazy, but as girls, we are not encouraged to ask for what we’re worth,” she said.
“This starts at home,” Owen wrote in her now viral rant. “Parents, teach your children, ESPECIALLY your daughters, to name her price and stand confidently in it: ‘I would love to babysit your children and I charge X per hour.’ It’s just one sentence. Practice it with her.”
