While serving in Afghanistan, Sgt. Chris Duke took in three local strays to give his squad some friendly faces while they were overseas.
This is not uncommon. Soldiers will often adopt dogs because they are friendly reminders of home and they give a bit of hope and calmness in an otherwise depressing environment.
In this case, Duke, and his squad adopted three dogs, named Sasha, Target, and Rufus. The dogs became like family and took to the soldiers rather well.
But then, the unthinkable happened:
One night a man tried sneaking into the base where Sgt. Duke and the dogs lived. The dogs, sensing an unfamiliar stranger, were posed and ready to attack. Fortunately, their senses did on fail them and they reacted appropriately to the stranger.
Terrified of the three dogs, the attacker set the bomb off early, tragically killing Sasha in the attack, but sparing Rufus, Target, and the rest of the camp.
