You might think our youth is in trouble, but the following story proves that some teachers and administrators have way more to improve than their young students do.

A mom from Huntsville, Alabama has voiced her outrage on Facebook after her daughter came home upset at the way she was treated for her seemingly normal outfit of black leggings and an oversized sweatshirt.

Grissom High School student Josephina Thompson said she and a friend were stopped before class started by a female security guard who brought her to the In-House Learning Center, an out-of-class detention room, for breaking the school’s strict dress code.

“They were told they could not go to class at all until somebody came to school and brought them appropriate clothing,” Deanna Wolf, Thompson’s mother told AL.com. Luckily, the other girl’s mother was able to bring them new clothing so they could return to class, but the damage had already been done. “If nobody had been available, she would have had to sit in that room all day and would not have been able to go to class,” said Wolf.

Wolf took to Facebook to explain that her daughter was wrongfully punished, as she followed dress code wearing leggings as long as they are covered by shorts, skirts or dresses that are no higher than three inches above the bend of the back of the knee, according to AL.com.

“I disagree with a lot of the dress code but I have told my children that we have to abide by rules, whether we agree with them or not,” Wolf wrote. “There’s a time and place for rebellion, but this isn’t it. My daughter has always been very careful and was abiding by the rules.”

However, the mother of three daughters said it’s wrong for the school to try and penalize girls for potentially “distracting” other students.

“It’s always been very important to me to raise my girls to understand their worth, to be proud of themselves and their bodies, to not be ashamed of anything,” she told AL.com. “Girls are not to be held responsible for the actions and reactions of other people… And to tell them they have to alter their own appearance so they don’t distract the opposite sex and take away from their education takes so much away from those girls.”

Josephina Thompson even created this flier and what she sees as an unfair gender bias in the school system’s dress code.  “I am proud of my daughter,” Wolf said. “She has always been a staunch believer in equal rights. Not that women are better, but that we’re all the same and nobody should be treated as better or less than anybody else.”

“It’s the cultural norm to shame girls and to hold them responsible for other peoples’ actions and thoughts,” she said. “I don’t think it’s going to change, but that’s not to say I won’t fight for change, because I will… The girls are standing up and making their voices heard, and it’s awesome.”
