If there’s just one thing we know about life it’s this: it goes on.
Life is cyclical. Just as one begins, another draws to a close. This was what happened in the case of Mark Augler in 2012, who barely found the time to meet his baby girl.
Mark was losing the battle to a fatal lung disease just as his wife Diane was about to bring a new life into the world. As Mark’s life was drawing to a close, his dying wish was to meet the little girl whose life was on the rise. But as his health dwindled, it seemed as if his last wish was not meant to be.
“I want to see her,” Mark requested, talking about his unborn baby, Savannah. The doctors suggested they induce labor two weeks early, and Diane immediately agreed. Savannah was born just two days later on Jan. 18. The father spent some time with Savannah: “He held her for 45 minutes,” says Diane. “Him and I just cried that whole time.”
Diane placed baby Savannah in his arms during those final minutes: “His heart rate started to drop, and his breathing started to drop, so I put her in his arms and held his hand until he died.”
Diane says Mark was a great father. “He would talk to my stomach when I was pregnant,” she says. “He was so excited for her. He would have been a wonderful daddy to Savannah.”
Mark was 52 when he died, but in those years, he lives a life of love and happiness.
