A Michigan mother is furious after she says her son was suspended from school for doing the right thing.

Kyler Davies is a 7th grade student at Legg Middle School, who found a pocket knife in the bottom of his backpack. Kyle’s mother Denise Davies tells wwmt.com she bought her son the bag at Goodwill and never checked to see if anything was inside. Davies is a foster parent, and told wwmt.com that none of her children have access to those types of items.

Being an honest boy, her 12-year-old son Kyle told a counselor at the school when he found it, and was immediately suspendedHe was turning it over like he was supposed to, and you are punishing him for doing what’s right. So what is that teaching these kids?” Denise Davies asked. Davies says that according to school rules, the incident means an automatic one year suspension, although the punishment was later knocked down to 30 days.

The issue also spilled over onto the football field, where the school also tried to keep her son from playing football. “The school told me he could not go to their property, he could not play; he can’t ride he bus with his team because it’s a Coldwater bus,” she said. “I understand the violence stuff that’s going on in schools, I said but when you get some boy that’s honest and turns it in–he wasn’t trying to hide it–and then he’s getting punished for it,” Denise said.

When Newschannel 3 reached out to Goodwill Industries of Central Michigan’s Heartland for a statement, they replied:

“Over 1 million items are donated to us each year and we are very grateful for that support. We take the safety of our customers, employees and community very seriously. Our staff does their best to inspect every item donated to us with safety in mind. However, we rely on people to inspect each item donated and it is possible something was missed. We cannot say with absolute certainty that this event did or did not occur. If it did, we apologize and hope that the School Board takes this statement into consideration when making its decision about this student.”

Davies says that after this incident, she doesn’t think her son will be back to Coldwater Community Schools

Can you believe this school punished a child for doing the right thing? Have you ever experienced an injustice like this at a school?
