They said a mother will do just about anything for her child and the following viral photo proves exactly this.
Rebecca McKeever is a professional doula by trade and a new mother by life’s blessing. She helps many women experience the miracle of pregnancy and childbirth, and educates new parents in bicoastal practices in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, according to her business Carriage House Birth’s Instagram page.
McKeever is also well-educated on the importance of nursing a newborn, but knows well that there is no “right way” to feed your baby. So when McKeever became a mother herself to baby girl Andromeda, she was faced with a challenge as the newborn was unable to latch on to her breasts and feed.
About 17 hours after Andromeda was born, McKeever’s husband snapped a photo of her feeding the infant with a syringe full of her milk.
“A lactation consultant came to our hospital room to ask if we needed help,” McKeever explained to the Huffington Post. “She saw that I was expressing colostrum but that Andromeda wasn’t latching, so she brought in little cups and syringes so we could get some food in her. I expressed some colostrum into a cup, then put it into the syringe and fed her little drops at a time.”
The new mom was amazed at how quickly her newborn daughter changed after feeding. “A few minutes after getting that nourishment, she woke up a bit more and actually tried the breast! We had to do a mix of syringe feeding and breastfeeding for the first week,” she said.
“In that moment, I felt so empowered and happy to be able to feed my baby,” McKeever told Huffington Post. “Even if it wasn’t in the ‘traditional’ way, it didn’t matter to me! I knew it might take some time.”
