Anyone who has ever struggled with their weight knows that shedding the pounds can be as simple as changing your diet and exercise routine, but keeping it off is an entirely different story.
Yet when you’re forced to take a good, hard look at yourself – and your progress – every day, it becomes a tad bit easier. That’s exactly what one woman did when she decided she was way too young to look and feel the way she did.
At just 23, Simone Pretscherer Anderson of Auckland, New Zealand weighed about 372 pounds and knew she needed to change her life for the better.
She told TODAY she started off small. “I knew I had to exercise, so I started with daily walks or swims,” Pretscherer said. “I would go to the local pool and swim as many laps as I could in an hour. Or I’d walk for an hour.”
Over the course of the next 11 months, Pretscherer also tried to take a ‘selfie’ photo every single day to track her progress and keep herself motivated. Although she saw results quickly, progress didn’t happen overnight. “After eating high-sugar content foods,
Although she saw results quickly, progress didn’t happen overnight. “After eating high-sugar content foods, regular food didn’t taste as fun,” Pretscherer told TODAY. “It took about three months to retrain my body to really learn what food tastes like.”
“On days when I could not be bothered to go to the gym, seeing a message of inspiration on Facebook or Instagram would push me to get moving,” she told TODAY of the many fans who encouraged her on her journey.
“There were weeks when the scale wouldn’t move, and that was really difficult,” Pretscherer remembered. “But then I’d turn to social media and people would encourage me.”
In 2015, Simone’s incredible weight-loss story went viral, when people accused her of not being the same person in photos she shared.
Later, Simone shared more personal photos after getting plastic surgery to remove the skin. Now she hopes to help others on their journey towards a healthier, happier lifestyle.
“It was an achievement I had set my mind to, in a time period I dreamed about doing it in. I had to celebrate with my family and friends!,” Simone told TODAY.
