This is the same couple who made history last year when the transgender ‘father’ fell pregnant by the trans ‘mother.’
Diana Rodriguez (who was born a man) and Fernando Machado (who was born a woman) are Equador’s most high-profile transgender couple, and for many, they’re a symbol of tolerance in the region.
Rodriguez, who was born a male spoke told BBC how she never thought she’d know the joy of being a parent. “Being a mother was never something I thought I would do because I am a transsexual,” she said. “The law before demanded that to be recognized as a woman you had to be castrated.”
The couple initially announced the news of their pregnancy online, and that they conceived naturally, as neither of them have undergone lower-body surgery. “This was the wish of both of us and there was nothing biological or legal to stop us, so we decided to do it,” Rodriguez said.
“We live as man and woman,” she continued. I’m a transfeminine woman and Fernando is a transmasculine man. The process to get here was complex for each of us. Knowing it’s our right, we decided to add another member to our family.”
Machado also described the moment he found out he was pregnant. “I started crying with happiness, fear and dread, all at once. It was the most beautiful moment. I had never felt like that before. Wow, at last, I am completely happy.”
These very modern parents do not have a name for their 6-week-old, but they’ve been calling their child Caraote, which translates to ‘the snail.’
